PNW Unicorn Farm (Continued)
In the last issue of The DL, I noticed there were five new $1B+ companies in Seattle. I should have also mentioned that up north in British Columbia, there have been NINE new $1B+ companies over the last nine months:
  • Blockstream - Crypto infrastructure based on Bitcoin
  • Visier - Pre-built analytics for people and HR teams
  • Trulioo - Online identity verification services
  • Clio - Software for law firms
  • Dapper Labs - Blockchain-based games
  • GeoComply - Location compliance and fraud detection
  • Galvanize - Risk and compliance software
  • Thinkific - Online course platform
  • AbCellera - AI-powered antibody discover platform
  • (Here’s a link to a longer article in the Vancouver Tech Journal)
With the exception of Dapper Labs (founded 2018), all of these companies were founded more than seven years ago (between 2007-2014).
It takes a long time to build a $1B+ business, and given how much the tech economy has grown over the last seven years, it’s exciting to think how many more soonicorns there are in the PNW.
The DL Jobs
Last month, I asked if you’d be interested in a curated list of PNW startup jobs, and a bunch of you got back to me saying yes and/or asking to post jobs, so here is the first issue of The DL Jobs!
Sales and Marketing
There are even more roles on the full list, so check out the Pallet board here if you want to see more PNW startup jobs (you can post new roles there, too, and I’ll feature them in the next issue of the DL!).
PS - If any of you would be interested in helping me manage this job board, please shoot me an email! 😄
Teams Hot Take
Ian Bogost
Unpopular opinion: Microsoft Teams is fine, precisely because it’s not Slack, and totally uncool, so nobody wants to “hang out” there, and it just becomes work IM.
😎 WDYT - is it cool to produce uncool enterprise software?
Other stuff Dan's talking about
🍎 $212B per year - According to the economist, Tim Cook is the most successful “successor CEO” ever, having created $2.1T of market cap at Apple over the last 10 years. (And he only gets $750M for that!)
💱 FTX Trilogy - One of the most interesting bios I have ever read. MIT grad starts making $10M PER DAY doing crypto arbitrage; decides it would be fun to start a crypto exchange; two years later it’s worth $18B
💪 How to Work Hard - Interesting Paul Graham essay. “One thing I know is that if you want to do great things, you’ll have to work very hard. I wasn’t sure of that as a kid.”
🐳 Weird Whales and Yee Haas - CNBC story about a 12 year old that learned HTML this year, started making NFTs, and has made $400K. Here are links to buy his NFTs

About me: I’m the CEO of a startup in the low code / productivity tools space. Before that, I was a partner at Madrona, a Seattle-based VC firm.
